Nearly everything you see here is new, and you can feel it from the curb. The house sits at the very end of a cul-de-sac lined with beautiful homes, under old trees that have been growing over the street for decades. Every lawn on the way in looks cared for, and the brand new siding catches the light as you pull up. You can feel the search ending before you cut the engine.Inside, it keeps going: a redone kitchen with quartz counters and all new appliances, fresh vanities and showers in both baths, new floors from the entry on through, a new deck out back, and a roof that went on this year. This is the walkthrough where you stop checking ceilings for stains and start picking a move-in date. When moving day comes, the first thing you open is a box, not a toolbox. That first night, you light the wood burning fireplace at the end of the living room, pull a blanket over your knees, and watch the front windows go dark while the logs snap and settle, with nowhere else you need to be. Upstairs, the primary bedroom stretches nearly 20 feet with windows on two sides, and the next morning two people get ready at once without trading turns. The other two bedrooms each have more than one window.By Wednesday you have found the farmers market in front of Town Hall on Main Street, open through early November, and somebody there tells you about the Cornwall Fourth of July, running every year since 1950 with a parade, a historic pageant at Town Hall Park and fireworks after dark. Dinner that evening is at Painter's Tavern on Hudson Street, 5 minutes away.Saturday belongs to the side yard, the big fenced one, wide and green under the trees. The chairs come out onto the grass after lunch, the leaves crunch underfoot by October, and nobody carries anything back inside until dark.Sunday takes you down to the river, 7 minutes from home. Cornwall sits right where the Hudson cuts between Storm King and Breakneck Ridge, mountains rising straight out of the water on both sides, and the Riverfront at Donahue Memorial Park puts you at the edge of it all. Kayak tours push off from the shore in summer, the gazebo is the place to watch the light move across the mountains, and on winter mornings you can catch eagles riding the ice downstream. Other weekends it is the hike up Storm King Mountain with the whole valley below you at the top, the sculpture fields at Storm King Art Center, or Black Rock Forest for the days you want more woods than view. Much of that high ground is state park and protected forest, so the ridgelines you see now
